‘Drug peddler’ killed in Teknaf ‘shootout’

An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila in what the police described as shootout.

The incident was reported from the upazila’s Moheshkhalia para area in the wee hours of Wednesday (Apr 24), said police.

The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Dil Mohammad Prakash Dilu who is accused in several cases including drug smuggling and human trafficking, said Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.

“Acting on a tip off, police arrested Dilu on Tuesday (Apr 23) evening. After primary interrogation, he (Dilu) said that a few days ago he smuggled yaba tablets and weapons and have been kept hidden at a remote place in the area,” said Das.

“Later, a team of police conducted a drive in the area along with Dilu around 12.30am on Wednesday. As soon as the team reached at the area, Dilu’s cohorts opened fire on police members and in self defense they had to retaliate which triggered the shootout. Dilu was bullet hit in the incident,” he said.

“Dilu was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared him dead,” he added.

Six firearms, 13 rounds of ammunition and 7,000 yaba tablets were seized from the scene,” added the OC.

Five police members, Sub-Inspector Sabbir Ahmed, Md Babul, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjib, Shariful Islam and Constable Ebrahim, were injured in the incident and have been admitted Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
