Two Rohingya men have been killed in a gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox's Bazar, who the paramilitary troops claimed were ‘drug traders’
The gunfight was reported from Palangkhali border of the district’s Ukhiya Upazila early on Monday (Apr 22), said BGB.
The deceased have been identified as Md Faruk Hossain, 23, and Saiful Islam, 28; both were residents of block A, Rohingya camp 19 in Thaingkhali, Ukhiya.
Captain of Cox's Bazar’s BGB-34 Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed said, “The drug traders opened fire on a BGB patrol team and the troops retaliated in self-defense.
"During the gunfight, the other drug traders fled the scene leaving the duo behind, as they had been shot," he said adding two sharp weapons and 20,000 yaba pills were recovered from them.
Later, the injured Rohingya men were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.
Ahmed said. "The deceased two were drug traders and residents of the Rohingya camp. They traded drugs through several border areas of Ukhiya and Teknaf.
"The dead bodies have been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy," added the BGB captain.
