A court in Chapainawabganj has given death penalty to five people for raping a young woman and then killing her.A court in Chapainawabganj has given death penalty to five people for raping a young woman and then killing her.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Shawkat Ali passed the verdict after the hearing at the district’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal – 2 on Thursday (Apr 18).
The court has also acquitted three people in the case and slapped the convicts with a fine of Tk 100,000 each.
The death row convicts are- Nayan Karmakar Rabidash, 32, Prashanta Rabidash, 26, Nitai Chandra Rabidash, 30, Subhash Das, 46, and Prashant Rabidash, 28.
Amongst them Nitai, Subhash and Prashanta are still on the run.
Those who have been acquitted are: Sree Krishna, Abdur Rahim and Shohagi Begum.
According to the case dossier 24-year-old Ayesha Khatun went missing on Jun 13 of 2015.
Police recovered her body from a ditch in the Sadar Upazila’s Moharajpur the next day and sent the body for autopsy.
The autopsy report revealed that the victim was first raped and then strangled to death.
On Aug 15, 2015, Sadar Police Sub Inspector Shamim opened a case against unidentified suspects based on the report.
On Dec 14 of that year, Sadar Police Inspector Sarwar Rahman submitted a charge sheet against eight suspects.
