An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cumilla in what the police described as shootout.

The incident was reported early on Thursday (Mar 21) from Dhanpur area in the district’s Sadar Dakkhin Upazila, said police.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Jamal Haque alias Jambu Mia.

“Being tipped off that a group of drug peddlers has gathered in the area, police conducted a drive there. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire, forcing them to fire back in self-defense which triggered the shootout,” said Sadar Dakkhin police OC Mamun-ur-Rashid.

“The incident left Jamal injured while the others managed to flee the scene. He was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead,” said Rashid.

The OC added that police seized 30 kgs of hemp and 2,000 yaba tablets from the scene.

Police said that Jamal was wanted in 11 cases filed with different police stations in the district.
