No case has been lodged over the killing of seven persons at Baghaichari in Rangamati and police have not been able arrest anyone over the incident.

Since the area is remote, the killers possibly fled to the mountains.

Baghaichari thana OC, AM Manzurul Alam, said, “Six bodies were handed over to their families after post mortem; no case has been filed since the families of the dead are distraught.”

A case may be lodged on behalf of the family on Wednesday (Mar 20), otherwise the police will lodge a case, he added.

Bilaichari thana OC Md Parvez said, “we went to the spot, carried out the post mortem and handed over the bodies to the families; we were told that cases will be lodged by the families and therefore, are waiting.”

On May 4 last year, the law enforcers began a crackdown after the killing of Naniarchar upazila chairman and UPDF head Tapan Jyoti Borma along with four others, though the result has not been satisfactory.

Reportedly, killings have not stopped and 15 to 17 persons have been killed in the last one year.

The latest incident, in which seven persons on election duty were gunned down, adds to the death tally.

Within 12 hours of the Baghaichari killing, Bilaichari upazila Awami League president Suresh Kanti was killed by unidentified assilants.

An AL organized anti-terror rally will be held at the municipality field, informed hill district AL general secretary Musa Matbor.
