A general view of Cumilla city. The number of multi-storied buildings is rising fast in Cumilla and while these were built for commercial and residential purposes, almost 90 percent do not have adequate fire extinguishing equipment. Many do not have enough roads which will impede easy access of fire brigade cars in case of emergency.

People believe that if there is a fire accident, the results will be devastating.

Cumilla has more than 300 multi-storied buildings (more than six floors). On the other hand, most ponds, water bodies of the town are now filled, reducing sources of emergency water.

The buildings also lack proper fire exits. Reportedly, fire accidents are regular occurrences at colonies.

The city and the local fire service have to rely on outdated equipment.

There is a growing feeling that the authority should be more vigilant in approving plans for buildings.

The city corporation and the administration need to be more active.

Chief Executive Officer, of Cumilla City Corporation, Anupam Barua, said, “While approving building plans, the issue of fire extinguishing is given due importance and plans are passed after approval from fire service and civil defence.”

Assistant director of fire service and civil defence of Cumilla, Ratan Kumar Nath, said, “We do not have equipment to tackle fire on multi-storied buildings, and operate amidst man power plus equipment crisis.”
