Due to lack of trained teachers, the measure to impart lessons in mother tongue is not seeing the light of day. Though teaching through the languages of ethnic minorities was included in the curriculum, the teachers do not have any training on the matter.
Assistant teacher of Bonorupa Government Primary School, Kalpana Talukdar, says, “At the pre-primary classes, teachers impart lessons in Chakma language as they were given training, however, classes cannot be taken in Marma or Tripura language since teachers have not been trained.”
Head teacher of Police Line Government Primary School, Chiku Chi Mog, says, “We have students from Chakma and Marma communities but cannot take classes due to lack of trained teachers.”
The government initiative to impart lessons in language of ethnic minorities will succeed once teachers are trained, added Chiku Chi.
Member of the hill tracts zila council, Aungshu Poru Chowdhury, says, “Teachers have been given training for two years and there will be another bout of training this month.”
District primary education officer, Md. Khorshed Alam, says, “We have a list of teachers to be trained and 748 will be given training in Chakma, 103 in Marma and, 5 in Tripura.”
This year, 86318 books in Chakma, Marma and Tripura language were distributed. Books in the languages of ethnic minorities started to be printed after the 1997 peace treaty. The curriculum was raised from pre-primary to classes one and two in 2019.
