As many as 31 bodies of unborn babies have been recovered from a drain of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, which the authorities said “were preserved for research purposes”.

Hospital sources said conservancy workers of Barisal City Corporation found the bodies in the drain behind the hospital building on Monday (Feb 18) night while cleaning it and informed the hospital authorities.
The embryos are 15 to 20 years old and those were kept at the college lab for research work of its students, said hospital director Dr Bakir Hossain before adding that the dumped bodies were “not useable.”
Officer-in-charge of Barisal Sadar police Nurul Islam said they were looking into the matter.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee has been formed with Gynecology department head Khurshid Jahan Begum as its head to look into the matter.
