As many as 253 villagers have been sued over the Feb 12 clashes between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and villagers that left three people dead.
Nayeb Subedar Ziaur Rahman, company commander of Thakurgaon BGB 50 Battalion’s Betna border outpost, lodged the cases with Haripur police on Thursday (Feb 14) night, said OC Md Amiruzzaman.
One of the cases accuses three men of smuggling cattle from India while another one accuses 250 villagers with naming 19 people.
Thakurgaon BGB 50 Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud confirmed filing of the cases.
The cases accuse the villagers of obstructing state law enforcement, attacking BGB troopers, attempt to snatch firearms and damage weapons, trying to kill the border troopers, among others.
“We have accepted the cases,” the police officer said. “Further steps will be taken after we get directives from Thakurgaon police superintendent.”
Three people killed and 16 others injured after BGB members opened fire during, what the paramilitary force said, a clash with cattle smugglers.
The incident took place at Bahrampur village in Haripur Upazila.
