Election vibe in GCC, polls begin Jun 26

Activity of Awami League mayor candidate Jahangir AlamThe Election Commission (EC) has announced the election schedule for the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) again, after the country’s top court ruled out a stay order imposed upon the polls.
The battle of ballots in GCC will be held on Jun 26.
According to the schedule, the candidates can start campaign from June 18.
Although there is one month left before the scheduled date for starting election campaign, the candidates already have unofficially started campaign adopting various tactics.
As the first day of Ramadan was Friday, the candidates after attending the Juma prayers at different mosques exchanged greetings with people and sought vote for their respective symbols.

Earlier on May 6, the HC stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election for three months in response to a petition filed by a Savar Awami League leader on redistricting the city premises.
On May 10, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, revoked the HC order after hearing separate appeal petitions filed by two mayoral candidates – Hasan Uddin Sarkar of BNP and Zahangir Alam of AL.
The apex court also instructed the EC to hold the polls within Jun 28.
Seven persons are vying for the mayoral post, 254 for the councilor posts while 84 candidates will compete for reserved councilor posts.
The city has a total of 11, 37,736 votes.
All the mayoral candidates in the row are trying to cast people’s attention but the two candidates from ruling AL and rival BNP have attracted the people’s interest.
