Two alleged drug peddlers have been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as shootout.
The incident was reported from the district’s Teknaf Upazila in the early hours on Tuesday (Jan 8), said RAB.
The victims are identified as 35-year-old Hafezur Rahman and 25-year-old Sabbir Hossain.
Three RAB members, CPL Nurul, ASI Kasem and Rashed, were also injured in the shootout.
“When a covered van was crossing a RAB check post at Domdomina area in Ringla Union, the team gave it a signal to stop. Denying signal, the drug peddlers opened fire on the RAB team, prompting them to fire back, triggering the shootout,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Shah Alam who is the acting company commander of RAB-7.
“The two drug peddlers received bullets when they were trying to flee the scene. Later, they were rushed to the Teknaf Health Complex where the doctor declared them dead,” added Shah Alam.
“Two others managed to flee.”
40,000 pieces of yaba, a revolver, a one-shooter gun and 11 round bullets were seized from the scene,” added the elite force official.
