A complaint has been filed against Jatiya Oikya Front leader and Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain seeking action under the Digital Security Act.
Mostafizur Rahman aka Mithun Mostafiz, a lecturer of IU’s Folklore Studies department and acting editor of Daily Bangladesh Somoy, filed the written allegation with Islamic University (IU) police in the western district of Kushita at 5pm on Friday (Dec 14).
IU police OC Ratan Sheikh said, “Mithun Mostafiz came to sue Dr Kamal instead we received the allegation and filed a general diary (no. 621/12/12.18).
“The general diary has been transferred to Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Darrussalam station and they will look into it,” said the OC.
The allegation said, like the people from all walks of life, Dr Kamal Hossain went to pay tributes at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at around 10am on Friday.
After paying homage at around 10:30am in front of the memorial, when Dr Kamal Hossain was asked about his position on the Jamaat-e-Islami, which openly opposed Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, he rebuked my fellow journalists and reprimanded on live broadcasting, it reads.
He threatened them (journalists) saying, “How much were you paid to ask these questions? What’s your name? I’ll remember your face. Which newspaper/television do you work for?”
Millions of Bangladesh’s audiences watched it and his remarks has tarnished the image of journalist community as well as disrespected them.
The intimidation by Dr Kamal and his intimidating remarks are against the independent journalism and the constitutional rights on freedom of expression as well as a threat to it, which is a criminal offence under the Digital Security Act 2018, it said.
