A journalist has been severely beaten up by ‘chattra league activists’ in Rangpur’s Begum Rokeya University because he protested harassing of a female friend of his.

The ruling party student wing, however, denied the allegation, saying the people involved in the incident are not chhatra league members.

The incident was reported around 8:30pm on Friday (Nov 17) near the campus police post.

According to the victim, Rabbi Hasan Sabuj, a university correspondent of the Daily Jugantor, he was talking with a female friend when chhatra league activists including Mehedi and Golam Morshed started to verbally abuse them. An argument ensued when he protested. At a point, they started to beat Rabbi leaving him severely injured.

The campus police post in charge Sub Inspector Mohibul rescued Rabbi and her friend and got him admitted at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital when his condition deteriorated.

However, the university’s chhatra league unit President Tushar Kibria said, chhatra league has nothing to do with the incident. Besides, the current committee only consists of its president and general secretary, he argued.

Rabbi and his friend are second-year students at the varsity’s Mass Communication and Journalism department.

Tabiur Rahman, a teacher of the department and varsity’s teachers’ forum general secretary expressed sadness in the incident and said that the head of department has been informed.

Professor Faridul Islam, the proctor, however, was unreachable when contacted for comments.
