The deceased is identified as Khorshed alias Master alias Samil, 38.
The incident was reported from the district’s Shibganj Upazila on Monday night (Nov 5), said police.
“Police conducted a raid at Tatipukur area in Pirob Union following a tip-off that a group of militants was gathering there. Sensing the presence of law enforcing men, the militants opened fire at police and in self-defence police had to retaliate which triggered the shootout,” said Bogra Sadar circle’s Additional Superintendent of Police Sanatan Chakraborty.
“At one stage the militants fled the scene and Khorshed’s bullet-hit body was found on the spot. He was rushed to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead,” added Chakraborty.
The doctor at the hospital’s emergency unit said that Khorshed died on the way to the hospital.
A pistol, a shooter gun, 2 rounds of ammunition, a machete and a dagger were seized from the scene.
Two police members, Sub-Inspector Ahsan and Constable Sabbir, who were injured during the shootout are now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Khorshed was a leader of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). He is also known as Master and Shamil, said Sanatan Chakraborty.
