Traders will import nearly 10,000 cattle from neighboring Myanmar to meet the demand of sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Adha, says a customs official.
“Traders show more interest on Myanmar’s cattle as they have planned to import 10,000 animals ahead of Eid-ul-Adha,” Teknaf Customs station official Jahangir Hossain told Bangla Tribune.
According to the customs sources, the government earned Tk 2.84 million in revenue as over 5,500 cattle including 4,000 caws and nearly 1,500 buffalos have been imported from Myanmar since Aug 1.
Teknaf Cattle Importers’ Association President Abdullah Monir, however, claimed they enjoy no privileges from the government to do their business.
The association leader could not elaborate on what previlage they should receive from the government.
Law enforcement agencies stay vigilant to prevent extortion and drug smuggling in guise of cattle import.
“Surveillance has been heightened on the Sha Parir corridor to keep the flow of cattle import and prevent extortion and smuggling,” said Teknaf police OC Ranjit Kumar told Bangla Tribune.
