Apparel workers have ended their blockade on Dhaka-Mymensingh highways after Gazipur city mayor assured them of meeting their demands on wage and Eid bonus.
The workers cleared the roads at 4pm on Friday.
Speaking to Bangla Tribune, Mayor Jahangir Alam said, “I have talked to the factory owners, workers and the police. I requested the workers to call off the blockade as the owners said that they will provide wages and bonus on Sunday (Aug 19).”
“I assured the workers that I will come in person to realize their demand (on wages and bonus on Sunday),” Alam said.
Earlier, nearly 14,000 workers of Cassiopeia Apparels Limited took position on the Mymensing highway in Hotapara area in Gazipur’s Sadar Upazila around 9am demanding their Eid bonus and 15-day wage of the running month.
The blockade created nearly 5-kilomiter-long tailback on the both sides of the highway.
Additional police forces were deployed since the beginning of the demonstration to keep the situation under control.
No incident, however, was reported.
