Hide prices drop to the lowest as the skin of a Tk 80,000 cow was sold for less than Tk 200 while that of a Tk 100,00 on a cow went for Tk 300. FILE PHOTOThe tannery owners have started purchasing rawhides in a limited scope ending all kerfuffle since the Eid-ul-Azha.
Tanners formally started buying the rawhides preserved with salt from Mymensigns on Saturday (Aug 17), said Sakhawat Ullah, secretary of Bangladesh Tanners’ Association (BTA).
They would continue to collect the hides for the next two months with the prices fixed by the government, he added.
The tanners’ body leader, however, said they couldn’t purchase any hides from the wholesale merchants, what the latter said “no sell of hides until their dues are paid.”
At an urgent meeting in Dhaka on Saturday, the Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association decided not to sell hides to the tanners.
“We have due of Tk 4 billion to the tannery owners and won’t sell hides until they repay us,” Association President Hazi Md Delwar Hossain told the media after the meeting.
Hide prices have hit a 31-year record low this year, prompting many to reportedly dump the hides on the street and to rivers.
Price dropped to the lowest as the skin of a Tk 80,000 cow was sold for less than Tk 200 while that of a Tk 100,00 on a cow went for Tk 300.
BTA blamed the wholesale merchants for the price fall.
“Wholesale merchants showed excuses of previous dues to reduce the hide prices during Eid-ul-Azha and a cheat the seasonal traders,” BTA Chairman Shain Ahmed told a media briefing on Aug 14.
Meantime, the commerce ministry has said they will sit with tannery owners, wholesale merchants, and hide traders on Sunday (Aug 18) to discuss the volatile market situation.
