Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) has called the government to set the price of paddy at Tk 1,200 per maund (40kg) to ensure fair price for the farmers.
“We believe the government should take several steps urgently to ensure fair price of agriculture products and raise the price by 20 percent while procuring [paddy] from the farmers,” BEA President Prof Dr Abul Barakat said while unveiling an alternative budget for the fiscal 2019-20 at a media briefing in Dhaka on Saturday (May 25).
At the press briefing, the body of economists proposed a Tk 12 trillion budget styled 'Building Bangladesh with the Spirit of Liberation in the Birth Centenary of Bangabandhu' for the next fiscal.
Proposing to set up agriculture crops producing regions, Barakat said, “Farmers will face a loss of Tk 500 per maund in Boro crops this year. The government has enough reason to worry about this.

“The government has to ensure that farmers can sell paddy at the market price without any hassle,” he added
