Public hearing on gas price hike begins Monday

Gas prices were revised up by an average of 22.70 percent in February last year with households hit with over a 50 percent monthly rise.The energy regulator’s public hearing for revising gas prices starts from Monday (Jun 11).
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission’s (BERC) series of public hearings at the auditorium of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will end on Jun 21.
On the first, the BERC will hold a hearing on the proposal of raising transmission charges of the Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL).
The next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (Jun 13), when the proposal by Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company to raise transmission charges and consumer-level gas prices will be heard.
The next day Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company’s proposal will be heard. The rest of the hearings have been scheduled after the Eid-ul-Fitr.
After joining the club of liquefied natural gas (LNG) importers, Bangladesh has now moved to another round of gas price hike after revising it last year.
The country became the first LNG-importing nation in 2018 after the first shipment arrived from Qatar on Apr 24. The government expects to start supplying it to the national grid by this month.
Gas prices were revised up by an average of 22.70 percent in February last year with households hit with over a 50 percent monthly rise for stoves.
The LNG import has triggered the second round of revision, a little over a year after the last hike.
In March this year, gas transmission companies forwarded a proposal to increase prices by on an average 75 percent. They, however, did not propose to hike prices for household and commercial connections.

Households are charged at a monthly rate in two categories — Tk 900 for single burner stove and Tk 950 for double burner stove, which was hiked by 50%.
