Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City.So far, 431 applications have been submitted to get plots at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City, currently being implemented in Mirsarai, Chattogram, says ministry of industry sources.
It’s believed that officials of 68 institutes submitted 26 per cent booking money, of which, 24 are from Chattogram.
Each plot is one acre and almost Tk 870 million was submitted as booking money.
After the Rana Plaza tragedy on Apr 24, 2012, around 1795 factories shut down due to conditions of ILO, Accord and Alliance. The number of closed factories in Chattogram is 324.
The total number of garment factories in the country is 4455 and a large number of them is being transferred to the Mirsarari textile village.
Official of the textile village, Aabdur Rahman, says: “The work at the village is almost over with the task to select and assess application forms currently underway.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Vice President, Mohammed Nasir told Bangla Tribune: “This is a massive initiative for those related to this sector and making the optimum use of this effort, the sector has to be taken forward.”
Garment owners say that failing to adhere to conditions of Accord, Alliance and ILO, around two thousand factories have shut down but there is an effort to give these factories a chance by taking them within the Special Economic Zone.
Speaking on the issue, managing director of Adila Apparels in Chattogram, Shahinur Islam, says: This initiative is a great prize from the government which will save transport cost of ready-made garments and expand the industry.”
Initially there may be a problem getting skilled workers though this will change when factories start in full swing, he added.
Industry minister, Nurul Majid Humayun, says: “This textile village will trigger development of the area too.”
