REUTERS FILE PHOTOIt’s feared that with the parliament election in focus, some malicious sections may exploit the implementation of the wage board for garment workers to trigger widespread unrest. To avert any such situation, the textile sector is being brought under strict vigilance.
This will continue until a new elected government is sworn in. Several labour leaders are also under surveillance.
From 1 December last, the new wage board for textile workers was implemented and form January next, workers will get payment as per the new structure.
Reportedly, there is a simmering resentment among workers over the wage board which may be exploited to scar the peaceful holding of elections.
An additional secretary of the home ministry, said: “we are keeping a close eye and if needed, the government will go into action.”
At any cost, the law and order during elections will be maintained, he added.
State minister for labour and employment, Md. Mujibul Huq Chunnu, told Bangla Tribune: “though the wages of textile workers have risen by 51 per cent, efforts are underway to stir up agitation among them.”
A section is trying to create unrest using the wage as an issue, he added.
The new salary, declared through gazette, sets Tk.8000 as minimum monthly payment, which is a rise of Tk. 2700.
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association, BKMEA, president, A K M Selim Osman, says: “the increased salary will be given in January; the last evaluation was 2013 which was evaluated once more to declare the current amount.”
There is legal obligation to implement the wage board, he reminded.
