GP sees highest exit of users after MNP rolled out

Owned by Norway-based Telenor, Grameenphone is the largest operator in Bangladesh.Grameenphone (GP) users account for the majority of mobile phone subscribers who switched to other operators after mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced, according to the telecoms regulator.
With a subscriber base of a little over 70 million as of August this year, GP, owned by Norway-based Telenor, is the largest operator in Bangladesh.
MNP was rolled out on Oct 1, which the regulator says will ensure a level playing field for all the operators.
Between Oct 1 and 18, a total of 47,090 mobile phone users filed for switching operators, according to a report released by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Sunday.
Of them, 26,817 users switched operators, including 11,676 GP subscribers, it said.


Most of the subscribers opted to switch to Robi, according to the BTRC report.
In the 18 days since MNP was introduced, it added 16, 916 new users, while Banglalink 5, 526, GP 40,041 and state-owned Teletalk 334.
With a subscriber base of 46.13 million (August 2018), Robi is the second largest operator in the country. It is majority-owned by the Malaysia-based Axiata Group.
