While new types of crops are growing in the country, due to impact of climate change, previously unseen diseases and insects are also emerging. To counter this threat, chemical pesticides are being sued recklessly. This practice is severely impacting ecological balance, endangering several species of fish and beneficial insects.
At the initiative of the ministry of agriculture, the agriculture expansion department has taken a project called “Production of crops through eco-friendly strategies”.
Approved at the ECNEC on 11 October, it will emphasise on manufacturing safe crops in 61 zilas and 317 upazilas.
In addition to training 400 farmers, this will carry out paddy, vegetable and corn growing field level activities.
The expected expenditure will be Tk 1.72 billion, to be supplied from the government’s own funds with an end date set for 30 June, 2023.
Currently, too many chemicals like Formalin, Carbide, Ethanol and other poisonous materials are being used to preserve food and ripen fruits.
The new project will teach the farmers to safeguard crops, following ecologically safe methods.
Agriculture minister, Matia Chowdhury, said, “There has been a revolution in the country’s agro sector and once this project is implemented, people will be benefitted.”
