At a media call on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the decision.
“A subsidy of Tk 31 billion will be needed for importing LNG,” BERC member Abdul Aziz Khan said before adding which means there will be no need to revise up the prices at consumer level.
In March this year, gas transmission companies forwarded their proposals to increase prices, said BERC Chairman Monowar Islam.
“Following which, we held a series of public hearings over the issue in June this year. However, taking in to consideration of all the aspects, including gas production, import of LNG and increased cost of distribution, the BERC decided not to revise up prices at the consumer level,” he said.
The Internal Resources Division has already lifted duties on import of LNG as well the supplementary duty on gas production prompting the regulator to not hike prices, the press conference was told.
After holding public hearings, the BERC approached last week the government for hiking the prices, but it was stalled upon the prime minister’s intervention.
