Form separate ministry for marine resources: Dr Kawsar

Speakers at the workshop oraganized by PIBFounder chairman of Department of Oceanography at Dhaka University Dr Kawsar Ahmed has urged the government to take effective measures to protect the marine resources of the country.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (Sept 12) at the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop on ‘Blue Economy’ organized by Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB).

‘Blue Economy’ is an emerging concept which encourages better supervision of marine resources.
He said “We need experts and equipments in the marine sector. The scope of ‘Blue economy’ is endless. Yet we still don’t know what kind of marine resources we have.”
“A new ministry should be established so that the marine borders and resources are protected and utilized properly” he added.
Dr. Kawsar also emphasized on the importance of comprehensive awareness regarding marine life during his address.
On the nature of the workshop, Director General of PIB Shah Alamgir said “This workshop is the first of its kind. Blue Economy is a relatively new concept and there is room for a lot of work here.”
Secretary for Ministry of Water Resources, Anwar Kabir, who was present during the ceremony said that the government was working actively to get a measure of the marine resources of the country.
