With just three days left for Eid-ul-Azha, holidaymakers are now crowding to book tickets for domestic flights although carriers have reported a complete sell-out days ago.
Local airlines see a boom in business during Eid vacations as an increasing number of people are flying home because of the heavy traffic congestions on the highways.
Airlines will operate additional flights on different domestic routes to meet the growing demand.
Dhaka resident Joynal Ahmed was found at Novo Air’s Banani booking offices on Saturday.
“I had no plan to travel to my district, but suddenly changed my mind. So, opted to take a flight but no luck,” he said while speaking to Bangla Tribune.
Amit Roy, who studies in Dhaka, planned to take a flight to Rajshahi and then take the train to his native Pabna.
“I could not book advance ticket for bus or train and thought of taking a flight. But could not book a flight to Rajshahi with any airline,” he said.
State-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines and three private carriers—US-Bangla Airlines, Novoair, Regent Airways—now run more than 80 domestic flights to eight destinations.
Biman says flights during Eid holidays were sold out by early August. “Still passengers are inquiring for tickets every day,” General Manager (public relations) Shakil Meraz told Bangla Tribune.
US-Bangla Airlines has also reported a complete sell-out.
“People are keener on taking flights to avoid long hours on the road. Passengers for Rajshahi and Syedpur account for a big chunk of the traveller. We are receiving queries for tickets even now. But we are sold out,” said General Manager Kamrul Islam.
Biman and US Bangla operates flights from Dhaka to all domestic routes— Chattogram (Chittagong), Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, Jashore, Syedpur, Rajshahi and Barishal.
Novoair operates flights to Chattogram (Chittagong), Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, Jashore, Syedpur, Rajshahi while Regent to Jashore, Syedpur, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
